Massive ‘Panama Papers’ leak reveals how also rich athletes hide money offshore
The trove of 11.5 million documents from Panama-based lawfirm Mossack Fonseca was obtained from an anonymous source by Germany’s “Süddeutsche Zeitung” newspaper.
The documents, dubbed the “Panama Papers,” show how the company helped its clients evade tax and launder money. The files also link current and former leaders, including Egyptian autocrat Hosni Mubarak, Libya’s former leader Moammar Gadhafi, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to illicit financial dealings.
The daily Süddeutsche shared the unprecedented leak with the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and other news outlets, including the BBC and “The Guardian.” Their findings were published Sunday after a year-long investigation into the documents.
“2.6 terabytes of data, 11.5 millions documents, and 214,000 shell companies: The Panama Papers are the largest data leak journalists have ever worked with,” Süddeutsche tweeted. […]

The papers reveal that around 140 politicians from around the world have been using offshore tax havens – among them 12 national leaders. Other individuals mentioned in the files included drug traffickers, celebrities and sports stars.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Iceland’s prime minister, Sigmundur DavÃð; Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif; and Alaa Mubarak, the son of Egypt’s former president, are all known to have offshore wealth. Russian President Vladimir Putin isn’t mentioned in the documents, but the ICIJ said his associates “secretly shuffled as much as $2 billion (1.7 billion euros) through banks and shadow companies.”
The files also reveal that the families of at least eight current and former members of China’s supreme ruling body, including President Xi Jinping’s brother-in-law, have been found to have hidden wealth.
The name of soccer player Lionel Messi also makes an appearance in connection with a shell company he owned with his father in Panama.

Swim safety begins with the attention of parents
If it’s springtime in Houston, that means pools and beaches will soon be open to the public.
With the warm weather, fun in the water comes with the hidden dangers of drowning. It can happen in just a matter of seconds.
Experts say when a child drowns, there is usually no splashing and they do not scream, making the situation even scarier.
Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury related deaths among children ages 1-4.
Again, it only takes a few moments for a child to drown. Last year, 75 children drowned in Texas, eight of those happening right here in Harris County.

What’s The Song In The Michael Phelps Under Armour Ad?
In a new television spot for activewear company Under Armour, billion-time gold medalist Michael Phelps preps for his final trip to the Olympics. He swims! He carbo-loads! He sleeps in a tube! He lifts his legs while hanging from a pull-up bar! He swims some more! He remains completely still during a cupping therapy session! As if this Rio de Janeiro training montage wasn’t enough to get me all sorts of psyched for this summer’s games, the commercial threw in a tune that’s so good, it deserves a gold medal of its very own. The song in the Under Armour ad where Phelps prepares to say his last goodbye to the Olympics is “The Last Goodbye†by the Kills, the indie rock duo of Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince. This record was the fourth single off of the band’s 2011 full length album Blood Pressures.

Military family life helped Olympian Chloe Sutton adapt during swimming career
At 6 years old, Chloe Sutton knew she wanted to be an Olympic swimmer.
The next 10 years — which were full of travel, sacrifice and hard work — that dream came true.
Sutton reached her first Summer Olympics as a 16-year-old in 2008 in Beijing and repeated the feat four years later in London.
However, after retiring from competition, the 24-year-old discovered a passion that she enjoys more than competition — imparting knowledge to younger swimmers across the country. Sutton made her first journey to West Texas where she is hosting a swimming clinic at Permian High School for the Odessa Aquatic Club.
“I feel so much more joy helping a kid to find confidence or believe in themselves,†Sutton said teary-eyed. “Having that kind of impact on somebody and making a change on their life in such a positive way. A lot my swimmers’ parents tell me they get bullied at school, and they don’t have any confidence when they are swimming. They feel like they want to give up, and I help them through that. They become not only better swimmers, but better people all around. It means a lot to me to have that kind of impact.â€
Sutton is no stranger to traveling around the country. Her father, David, was in the Air Force with space and missile defense and retired from the military as a colonel. Her father was also in the Pentagon during Sept. 11. Sutton, who was born at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, said their family moved up and down the east and west coast.
Moving around often, Sutton had to adapt at making friends quickly. That adaptation to meeting new people and experience different surroundings helped when Sutton became a professional swimmer.
