  • Russian swimmer Yuliya Efimova has called for an investigation into the Salt Lake City doping laboratory after she failed a drugs test for meldonium.

It comes as the 24-year-old has been named in the Russian team for August’s Olympic Games despite an anti-doping hearing by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) having not yet delivered a verdict.

Efimova, the 100 metres breaststroke champion at last year’s home World Championships in Kazan who has four world titles in all, has sent a letter to both the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) calling for an investigation.

“The incompetent and negligent persons who work in the laboratory disrupt [sic] the preparing of Yulia Efimova to the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 and jeopardized her appearance in Rio,” said the letter, written in conjunction with her agents Anna Mitkova and Andrey Mitkov.

  • An Iraqi refugee who raped a 10-year-old boy at a swimming pool in Austria has been jailed for a minimum of six years.

The 20-year-old man, who has not been named, had admitted rape and the aggravated sexual abuse of a minor at a court in Vienna.

His attack in December last year sparked a backlash against migrants in the country, which has since seen support for anti-immigration groups rise and implemented a controversial cap on refugee numbers.

  • It is a sight few have seen. So Jordan Kirbyson did what any 21st-century man would.  He whipped out the camera gear he happened to have with him and started recording.

“We see this object in the water,” said Kirbyson. “So I stand up and say, ‘Hey, there’s something in the water.’ Yeah, I thought maybe it could be a deer.”

Kirbyson and a neighbor, Chris Quinlan, had just finished water skiing on Lake Whatcom Sunday morning; his dad was acting a spotter.

“So I just flipped around and we slowly approached it,” said Quinlan.

“And it wasn’t until we got closer,” said Kirbyson, “That we actually saw the cat’s ears.  And we’re like.  It’s a cougar. So it was pretty incredible.”
