    Day 12 of the 17th FINA World Championships was the day of the World Records! Adam Peaty became the first one who ever swam the 50m breast in less than 26 seconds, Kylie Masse set a new World Record in the women’s 100m backstroke while Lily King shone in the women’s 100m breast, also with a new global standard.

    The 11th day of the 17th FINA World Championships in Budapest was full of excitement! Great Britain had a memorable day in the second swimming finals’ session winning two gold medals. Sarah Sjostrom, from Sweden, was the favorite for victory and she didn’t disappoint, touching home for gold in 55.53, a new Championships Record.

    Just shy of 100 years old, Bobbie Greenwood was honored by the Winters community — not for her age, but for inspiring swimmers in the community. Greenwood made a splash in the community by starting the swimming program at local schools.

  • Yusra Mardini, A Young Refugee, Finds Safety in Her New Home

    The United Nations Department of Public Information has launched a new animated video on the dramatic story of Yusra Mardini, a young refugee from conflict-torn Syria who achieved her dream to compete in the Olympics last year. Yusra Mardini was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on 27 April 2017. The video was produced by the Education Outreach Section in support of the Together Initiative to mark World Refugee day on 20 June and highlight the advent of the International Day of Peace on 21 September.

  • Over 2,000 swimmers cross Istanbul’s Bosphorus from Asia to Europe

    More than 2,200 swimmers participated in the 29th Samsung Cross-Continental Swimming Race from Asia to Europe across the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul.

    Some 2,277 swimmers from 49 countries swam the course, which started at Kanlica pier on the Asian side and ended six-and-a-half kilometres (4 miles) later in front of Kurucesme Cemil Topuzlu Park on the European side.

    TRT World’s Denee Savoia reports the annual race.
