  • Sixty-four percent of African-American children don’t know how to swim. World Champion Simone Manuel is changing that statistic.

“I am often referred to as “The Black Swimmer.”

While I one day hope to be known as an “Olympic champion” swimmer without that qualifier, I know that I can’t ignore the significance of being an African-American female in the sport.

When I’m referred to as an African-American Olympic swimmer, it makes it seem as though it’s not supposed to be done, which isn’t true. I work just as hard as anybody, I love the sport and I want to win just like everybody else.

I played basketball, volleyball, soccer and danced growing up, but I just had more fun when I was swimming. There were times when it was a challenge to fit in and it wasn’t always easy not having many swimmers who looked like me. But I enjoyed it and wanted to keep swimming and get stronger and faster.

As I kept going in the sport, I asked my mom why there weren’t more African-American swimmers, so we did our research, learning about Olympic medalists Maritza McClendon and Cullen Jones, and Sabir Muhammad and Byron Davis. I looked up to Maritza and Cullen because they shared a common experience and they helped me through some of those hardships with being the ‘only one.’”

  • “No one usually stands ahead of Michael on the podium,” Joseph Schooling said, wryly aware of the large dollop of understatement contained within that phrase.

The 22-year-old is looking back at one of the most exciting races of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and the Michael he is talking about is Phelps, the USA’s 23-time Olympic swimming gold medallist. The Olympic Games’ most decorated athlete of all-time was going for his fourth consecutive gold in the men’s 100m butterfly. There was also the small matter of 2013 and 2015 100m butterfly world champion Chad Le Clos and 2015 200m butterfly World Championship gold medallist Laszlo Cseh on the blocks.

“All I remember is walking out. It was an exciting feeling. I was very nervous, everything was at a high, all my senses were at a high,” Schooling recalled.

  • Ian Thorpe and his boyfriend are hoping to get as many Australians as possible to vote in favour of same-sex marriage.

Politicians in Australia’s Senate have repeatedly shot down attempts to hold a referendum on equal marriage. In 2016, the Liberal Party was re-elected with a promise that they would let voters decide on same-sex marriage through a popular vote.

However, the vote was blocked, and the result could have technically been ignored by lawmakers anyway. The government is now going to hold a plebiscite to gauge public opinion on the issue.

Ian Thorpe – a five-time gold medal winning swimmer – has unveiled a new video with his boyfriend, model Ryan Channing, in a bid to get people to update their electoral details so they can show their support for same-sex marriage.
