A Syrian refugee has stunned swimming experts by learning how to swim in just 12 months and is now training for the 2020 Olympics.

Eid Aljazairli, who is 24 years old, nearly drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe in 2016.

Now he is living with a British family and training at the London Aquatics Centre, as he tries to win a place on the Refugee Olympic Team.

  • Free diver attempts world record to tackle stigmas around mental health

An icy lake in Finland is set to be the stage for a South African free diver’s daring attempt to beat a Guinness World Record – all to raise awareness for the plight of those suffering from mental illness.

Amber Fillary, who has already broken a number of national records for static and dynamic free diving, is on her way to Finland to shatter the world record for free diving under ice. The current record holder, Johanna Nordblat, set the world record in March 2015, diving 50 metres under the ice in 2 °C water while only wearing a swimsuit, mask and cap.

Two years ago, while Fillary was putting plans into motion to attempt the current world record, Nordblat challenged Fillary to a swim off. Unfortunately, Fillary was unable to accept the challenge at the time as she was suffering from serious depression.

“I eventually went to see a psychiatrist who prescribed medication that helped me to better cope with the illness. Once I was back on my feet, I decided to accept Johanna’s challenge and set the date for 21 March 2019.”

Olympic swimming medallist Michael Jamieson returned to the University of Bath, the place where he both trained and studied, to become the latest inductee into the Hall of Fame for Sport.

Jamieson famously won 200m breaststroke silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games, smashing the British record three times during the championships and only being denied gold by a World Record swim from Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta.

He also won silver at both the Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the latter in his native Scotland, and earned podium places at the World and European Short-Course Championships during his six years with the British Swimming National Centre Bath squad.

  • ‘Swimming is the new yoga’: why the fashion pack are taking a dip outdoors

Nationwide, there is a boom in wild swimming. Even the fashion pack, rarely ones to embrace the great outdoors, have got involved. Anne-Marie Curtis, editor-in-chief of Elle, swims regularly at the Kenwood Ladies’ Pond on Hampstead Heath in London, as does designer Louise Gray.

Nearby, writer Eliot Haworth of Fantastic Man magazine can be found braving the often icy water at the men’s pond. “I wear a pair of quite skimpy ultramarine Adidas Lycra trunks and nothing else,” he says. “They are the same pair I bought when I was living in Finland and started going ice swimming. I find their utilitarian sportiness sets me in the right frame of mind for the task ahead. It might seem counterintuitive to bare more skin when it’s cold, but I prefer to have as little wet clothing on me as possible. They also dry quicker.”
