From the Archives: Why Ian Thorpe had to quit
It took just 12 last-gasp laps in a roped-off section of the Caringbah Leisure Centre for Ian Thorpe’s arms and legs to confirm what his heart and lungs had been telling him for weeks – that he was too sick to compete in the Commonwealth Games.
“When he climbed out he was very, very distressed,” said his coach, Tracey Menzies, after she and a flotilla of fascinated public swimmers watched him battle chronic bronchitis and other unspecified illnesses in a final effort to prove his fitness.

WADA files appeal against China’s Sun Yang doping decision
The World Anti-doping Agency said Wednesday it had filed an appeal against a decision to clear Chinese swimming star Sun Yang of missing an out of competition doping test.
WADA, meeting in Lausanne, told AFP that it had filed the appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport following a decision by swimming’s world governing body FINA not to pursue a case against the multiple world champion.
Sun, who has won Olympic gold in the 200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle, missed an out-of-competition test on September 4 at his home in China’s Zhejiang province.
“WADA has filed a CAS appeal in the case of Sun Yang,” a spokesman for the anti-doping authority said.

Terror attack safety fears raised over Commonwealth Games aquatics centre site
West Midlands Police has objected to the planned site in Smethwick which will become a new leisure centre after the 2022 games.
The force has made an objection to Sandwell Council over fears about a lack of protection from terrorist attacks.
Sandwell’s planning committee is due to decide whether to approve the planning application at a meeting tonight.
The state-of-the-art facility, earmarked for Londonderry Playing Fields, would cost £60million to build and host swimming events at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
