A domestic violence suspect attempted to evade law enforcement on Saturday afternoon. It didn’t work.

According to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a domestic violence incident in the vicinity of Bacara Resort near Goleta around 1 p.m.

The suspect, 47-year-old Michael Reardon, fled the area when deputies arrived and started a pursuit on foot.

Reardon jumped into the ocean and swam away from deputies, authorities stated.

“After the suspect continued for a length of time to evade deputies by swimming in the water, deputies became concerned for his safety due to the temperature of the water,” the press release stated.

The man was reportedly swimming between the west coast of Molokai and east coast of Oahu for about nine hours when a shark bit him in the abdomen, according to a Honolulu Emergency Medical Services report.

He was brought to the boat ramp at Maunalua Bay, where paramedics performed advanced pre-hospital trauma life support on him. He was then transported to a hospital in serious, but stable condition.

Olympic swim champion Kosuke Hagino said Friday he has pulled out of next month’s Japanese championships, blaming a lack of hunger and triggering concerns about his appetite for Tokyo 2020.

The 24-year-old was Japan’s best hope for a swimming gold medal next year alongside Olympic poster girl Rikako Ikee, who was diagnosed with leukaemia last month.

“I’ve been unable to achieve the results I had hoped for since the 2017 season,” Hagino said in a statement.

“As the gap between my targets and reality has widened, it has become harder for me to maintain my motivation.”
