In 2008, Michael Phelps was on top of the world as the fastest swimmer at the Beijing Olympics. He caught the globe’s attention with his skills but also with his jaw-dropping diet. Phelps reportedly consumed more than 4,000 calories each morning. Inside Edition tried to take on the massive meal. That year, Phelps also broke the record for most Olympic gold medals. Swimmer Mark Spitz, who had held the record for 36 years, told Inside Edition how proud he was of Phelps.

Luca Urlando, the grandson of an Italian Olympic hammer thrower, appears to be the U.S. successor to Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly.

Urlando, 17, broke Phelps’ national 17-18 age group record in Phelps’ trademark event on Friday night, clocking 1:53.84 at a Tyr Pro Series meet in Clovis, Calif. Phelps’ mark (1:53.93) was set in 2003, when it doubled as the world record. Urlando previously broke high school age group records held by Phelps and Caeleb Dressel in 25-yard pools.

Urlando is now the third-fastest American in history in the 200m butterfly behind Phelps and Tyler Clary. He also ranks third in the world this year behind Hungarians Kristof Milak and Tamas Kenderesi.

  • Synchronised swimming dads defy stereotypes on Father’s Day

Dads of synchronised swimmers tried their hands at the female-dominated sport for Father’s Day at the Piscine Gilbert Bozon in Tours on Sunday.

What started out as a joke from their daughter’s synchronised swimming teacher turned into six months of intense training, during which these motivated dads were determined to deliver a ‘synchronised swimming gala’.

Jeanne Chebassier, the teacher, said that “they are highly motivated students. And a motivated dad was a daddy selected to be part of the ‘swimming dads’ group.”

The dads’ synchronised swimming performance, which defied gender stereotypes, was a hit with the audience.

One of the dads, Mathieu, said: “It’s very, very hard. I can swim but doing synchronised swimming is very, very difficult.(…)The girls have merit, it’s amazing. They do more than a minute or two without breathing perhaps more while doing a ballet, on ballets from four to five minutes. It’s very impressive!”

Julien, another dad, said the end result was worth the effort to see their daughters smile: “We are not great gymnasts, so doing splits is a bit complicated in the water. But we simply do it for the kids, and when our girls see their dads from the audience, just seeing them happy is enough for us.”
