  • Ocean swimming changes skin microbiome, could raise infection risk

Ocean water exposure changes the human skin microbiome and could increase the likelihood of infection after swimming, according to findings presented at ASM Microbe.

“Our research demonstrated that ocean water washed off normal bacteria and simultaneously deposited ocean-borne bacteria onto the skin,” Marisa Chattman Nielsen, MS, a PhD candidate at the University of California, Irvine, told Infectious Disease News. “These changes persisted for at least 24 hours, and this could present an opportunity for pathogenic organisms to cause infection.”

Other studies have linked ocean water activities and infection. One study found that surfers are more likely to harbor antibiotic-resistant bacteria in their gut.

The Green Sail organization from Croatia filmed a video on the island of Brač in cooperation with Goran Čolak, a multiple freediving world champion and world record holder, and supported by the local Draulik Dive Center, discussing the problem of microplastics in the Adriatic Sea.

Goran ÄŒolak is the most successful Croatian free-diver and one of the most successful free-divers in the history of diving in the world, who broke more than 30 national records in both Free Diving associations, AIDA and CMAS. ÄŒolak is currently AIDA’s most successful male athlete from AIDA World Championships with six gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

The objective of the video is to remind the local population and tourists on the importance of proper waste separation. Moreover, the video aims to familiarize the local population with the problem of microplastics, and overly-consumed and harmful plastic as one of the most critical problems of our time.

This Father’s Day was one to remember for Al Roker!

While he and his family feasted on barbecue Sunday, the festivities actually kicked off the day before the official holiday — when TODAY’s weatherman-and-more took on the role of proud pop as he watched his 16-year-old son swim to success.

“Nick competed, for the first time, at the statewide Special Olympics in New York,” he explained during the 3rd hour of TODAY Monday. “He won a gold medal in the 25-yard butterfly and a gold medal in the 50-yard (freestyle).”

That’s right — two gold medals on the first try.
