Why Olympic Swimmer Simone Manuel Put an Inclusion Rider in Her Latest Contract
Last summer, Manuel signed a contract with sponsor TYR (a popular competitive swim and triathlon apparel brand) that includes a reportedly unprecedented inclusion rider. While she can’t share many specifics of the contract, she says that the rider is meant to “provide meaningful opportunities to traditionally under-represented groups,†and “make sure diversity is at the forefront†of TYR’s creative processes.
“Representation is super important, and so for me, that means including people in spaces where they may not always feel included. I’m so thankful that TYR has allowed that and hopefully this will drive more diversity in the sport of swimming and just drive more minorities to want to learn how to swim,†Manuel says.
There is one example Manuel gives of what these sort of opportunities look like: “Whenever I go to a photo shoot I ask for a black beautician, because oftentimes in the beauty industry, they’re not included,†she says. “So to bring them into the swim space allows them to feel that they belong there and also that they are important.â€

Missy Franklin: I Never Felt More Alone Than Before 2016 Olympics
Five-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin dropped by CBS Sports Radio on Wednesday to discuss her life, career, and retirement, among other topics, and also opened up about her battles with anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
“I think I always did a really good job of keeping a sense of normalcy, but really where I failed to do that was leading up to 2016,†Franklin said in studio on The DA Show. “I don’t think I’d ever felt more alone than I did in that year, and for the first time in my life I really started to let those expectations and that pressure in.â€
Franklin didn’t feel that pressure at the 2012 Games in London.
“It was my first time, no one knew who I was – everyone was just so excited for me,†she recalled. “But then all of a sudden when you do it once, people not only expect you to do it again; they expect it to be better. So I’m going into 2016 – still at 21 years old – but now instead of going to the Olympics because I love it and I’m so excited and I’m living out my dream, my fear is that I’m going to disappoint people and have a less successful Olympics, which of course I was never even thinking about during my first one.
“So carrying that weight is what led to so many mental health issues for me,†Franklin continued. “It was such a growth experience. It was miserable. I’m not going to paint over it in any way. It was the hardest time of my life, and it was such a challenge to get through it. But now being on the other side, I’m able to look back and recognize how much I learned about myself during that process.â€

FINA and OC Gwangju 2019 appeal to DPR Korea participation
With 50 days to go for the Opening of the 18th FINA World Championships in Gwangju (KOR), FINA and the Organising Committee of the competition held today a Press Conference in the City Hall of the Korean metropolis, in order to underline the importance of DPR Korea (PRK) presence in the FINA showcase.
Up to now, athletes from PRK haven’t registered for the Championships and the Gwangju authorities, together with FINA, have issued a joint declaration (see full text at the bottom of the text) asking for the country to reconsider their position.
FINA Executive Director Cornel Marculescu briefed the media on the present situation: “At this stage, we don’t have a final decision on DPR Korea participation. We continue working with DPR Korea and all other National Federations to ensure their participation in Gwangju and consequent possibility of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Moreover, their attendance also gives our members access to our Development Programme tools. We have a normal relation with DPR Korea National Federation, and some of its divers were present in the last leg of the Diving World Series, some days ago in London. All channels remain open on this issue.â€
Mr Marculescu then recalled that there is an official deadline for registration, but FINA keeps exchanging correspondence with National Federations to guarantee their presence in the FINA showcase. “This is an ongoing process, and we are confident that over 190 nations will be present in Gwangju,†he concluded.
