Holding her breath has become a career for Queenstown freediver Kathryn Nevatt, who is one of several adventurers featuring on the big screen at this year’s Mountain Film Festival.

Nevatt was first introduced to freediving when a scuba buddy invited her to a training session in Queenstown. She admits initially find the sport “odd” but after setting a national record, she was hooked.

“Freediving is a very personal challenge. Even when you’re competing, you’re not competing against other people, you’re competing against yourself,” she says in a clip from the film, titled The Breath Connection.

  • Water Safety Ireland urges people to swim at lifeguarded waterways

Water Safety Ireland is warning that there is an average of five drownings every fortnight in Ireland.

As people flock to lakes and beaches during the warm weather, rescue chiefs are reminding people that while it may be hot, water temperatures are still a good deal cooler.

Water Safety Ireland’s Roger Sweeney says cold-water shock is to blame for a lot of tragedy.

“A lot of people are used to swimming in the warmer environment of a swimming pool, indoors, over winter,” said Mr Sweeney.

“So for a lot of people, it will be their first time swimming outdoors.”

Mr Sweeney advises people to swim at a lifeguarded waterway.

Where that is not possible he said people should “use local knowledge to swim in areas that are known locally as safe.”

Residents in three New Jersey counties are being advised by state officials to avoid swimming in a popular lake this summer.

On Thursday, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) advised locals through a press release to avoid swimming or coming in contact with Lake Hopatcong. The body of water reaches the counties of Sussex, Passaic, and Morris, and is currently experiencing a widespread Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB).

The bloom can cause numerous skin conditions and illnesses, according to the DEP, and could potentially remain in the lake for weeks or longer. But despite these warnings, some locals have decided to visit the popular summer destination anyway.
