Two Long Island beaches have ordered swimmers out of the water on the hottest day of the year after a pair of shark sightings.

Red flags were put up at Lido West Beach and the adjacent Nickerson Beach in Hempstead Monday amid reports that a large bull shark was swimming in the waters off the coast.

The first sighting was reported around 10 a.m. at Lido West Beach. Lifeguard Logan Fitzgerald said he was paddling on a surfboard when he saw the maneater — thought to be between eight and 10 feet long — come out of the water.

A man was injured during an encounter with an alligator near a Mississippi waterfront park where several other alligators have been removed this month, according to wildlife officials.

The man was swimming with a group in the Ross Barnett Reservoir at Lakeshore Park on Friday when an alligator was spotted nearby, according to Ricky Flynt, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks’ alligator program coordinator.

The group left the water, but later got back in after the alligator disappeared, Flynt said. The official said the alligator was likely waiting under a pier and swam between the man’s legs when he reentered the water.

A woman was killed in an apparent shark attack off the coast of Maine on Monday, a rare occurrence that has only been recorded once before in the state by an unprovoked shark.

Maine Marine Patrol said a witness saw the woman swimming off the shore of Bailey Island when she was injured in what appeared to be a shark attack.

Two kayakers helped the person get to shore, and an ambulance provided further assistance, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Marine Patrol said.
