Tokyo reports record rise in new coronavirus cases as plans for Olympics scrutinized
A record 286 new coronavirus cases were reported by the city government in Tokyo on Thursday — the highest number of new cases recorded in one day in Japan’s capital since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
As a result, the city’s government raised its coronavirus alert to “red,” the highest of four levels, late Wednesday among fears of a second wave of infections. The previous daily high was 243 cases, recorded July 10, according to the city government’s tally.
Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike described the situation as “rather severe.” She also urged the Japanese government to reconsider the timing for its “Go To†campaign to boost domestic tourism, due to launch next week, pleading with people not to travel outside Tokyo unless necessary.

Safety concerns persist as IOC says Olympics without fans ‘something we don’t want’
The 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo will take place, and the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach says the committee would prefer they happen with spectators.
Bach said Thursday the IOC is fully committed to holding the games and said that holding the competitions behind closed doors is “something we do not want.†However, it is exploring multiple scenarios for how they can take place safely amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The IOC is expected to meet Friday to discuss additional details of what the Games could look like.
In March, the 2020 Olympics was pushed to next year because of the pandemic, and the Associated Press reported this week that the 2022 Dakar Youth Olympics have been postponed to 2026. Meanwhile, the Beijing Winter Olympics are still on for winter 2022.

A fight over nude swimming marks return of pre-coronavirus banalities in Europe
There is perhaps no better sign that people are eager to move on from the coronavirus than the fact that this German lake district town is embroiled in a heated debate about nude swimming, and it has drawn national attention.
The local council’s ban on naked swimming — and other activities such as naked yoga — has returned the town to the banalities of pre-coronavirus summers and earned it a spot on the national public broadcaster’s nightly newscast, where it received more airtime than the United States’ spiraling coronavirus outbreak that day.
Sitting fully dressed in his backyard, pro-nudist council member Thomas Held, 54, acknowledged that the interest in his fight against swimming trunks was “very strange.â€
“I think there are so many more important things,†he added.
