Overwhelmed with grief, Griffin told ABC11 his nephew was an exceptional swimmer who learned how to swim during preschool. The 20-year-old often taught his younger cousins how to swim while spending hot summer days at the family beach house in North Topsail.
“He swims in the ocean. He deals with rip currents. He’s a swimmer. He’s not somebody who doesn’t know how to swim. To hear he drowned in a small lake with so much security is just shocking,” said Griffin.
A 13-year-old swimmer in Claremont, Calif. died last Thursday after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms since July 4, CBSLA reported. The boy, Maxx Cheng, swam for Mt. Baldy Aquatics.
He reportedly tested negative for the virus about a week before his death but continued to quarantine in his room.
“Nausea, vomiting, chest pains,†his sister Charlotte told CBSLA. “That list that pops up, a little bit, on that initial search, he had all of those symptoms.†An autopsy to determine cause of death, including whether Maxx had COVID-19, is expected in the near future.
Maxx’s symptoms seemed to improve last week, according to his sister. “There was almost no cough,†Charlotte said. “The fever had gone down three days before he passed.â€

It was a warm but windy Sunday in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula near Marquette.
Twenty-one-year-old Marena Kouba and her boyfriend, Dayton Nash, were on vacation at the beach.
“We were at the island (Little Presque Isle) and the waves were really huge. There was a bad current, it was really strong even though you’re just stepping in the water,” Kouba said.
The couple had been watching some swimmers, two young kids and an adult, when they heard a yell for help.
