Antarctica’s Southern Ocean is known for its iconic endemic species—emperor, Adélie, chinstrap, and gentoo penguins; crabeater and leopard seals; and thousands more. Now you can add another to the list: “ice mermaid.”
Bárbara Hernández, a Chilean cold-water swimmer known as the “Ice Mermaid” (“Sirena de Hielo” in Spanish), is en route with the country’s navy to Antarctica, where in a few days she’ll attempt—in the name of conservation—the longest swim any person has ever taken in the Southern Ocean’s frigid waters. Her goal: to draw attention to the global call for the designation of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Southern Ocean—particularly the MPA for the Antarctic Peninsula, which Chile developed in partnership with Argentina in 2018.

“We have found that you can give a lesson away for free but many times if that family does not have transportation, there are other things from receiving that swim lesson for free, they’d never get in the water, they’d never receive those important water safety skills,” Brooke Bennett, the program developer, said.

A 15-year-old female and 16-year-old male are in custody after crashing a stolen vehicle into a bus carrying the Baldwin Wallace University swim team.
On the morning of Saturday, January 28, the Cuyahoga County Automated License Plate Reader System notified police departments that a 2021 gray Kia Forte that had been reported stolen was seen traveling south on Stearns Road at the intersection of Cook Road in Olmsted Township.
Officers from the North Olmsted Police Department responded to the area in an attempt to locate the vehicle.

A former Junior Olympian shares her experiences on how water has made an impact on her life and the lessons learned. Emily Middleton has been a synchronized swimmer since the age of 7. She has a passion for water sports and activities. During her time as a synchronized swimmer, she competed in four Junior Olympics across the county, also played water polo, was captain of the swim team, learned how to dive for her swim team, and got scuba certified. Currently, Emily is in her second year attending school at the University of South Florida, working towards a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology Alongside her love of water she also enjoys ceramics, music, and exploring the outdoors.
