Four lifeguards were honored Tuesday for saving the life of a swimmer at the Davenport North YMCA in January 2022.

Craig Kinzer was taking a lifeguard certification course when he suffered sudden cardiac death and lost consciousness in the water. Then four lifeguards on duty pull him out of the pool and begin CPR, which they continue for about 30 minutes.

“I consider myself very lucky that I was at where I was at when it happened and for their quick actions of them because the medics said if it wasn’t for them doing what they did they would not have had a viable body to work with when they got here,” Kinzer said.

There’s been “no lack of stories in the media” about eating disorders in swim sports, according to Swimming Australia President Dr. Michelle Gallen.

“You’re dealing with a very sensitive area when you need to talk to young people around things related to body image in a performance context,” she told Sky News Australia.

“Setting some guidelines around that and having some policies in place and then doing the education so that our entire community can take these guidelines on board and have really respectful considered conversations about this sort of stuff is really important.”

On the morning the U.S. Coast Guard in Astoria received a frantic mayday call from a yacht sinking near the treacherous mouth of the Columbia River, John “Branch” Walton was in his fifth and final day of advanced training as a rescue swimmer.

Walton and his classmates leapt at the chance to respond. But it was a quick game of rock-paper-scissors that settled which swimmer would plunge into the churning, frigid waters nearby. Walton won. He was the least experienced of the bunch.
