A good read about how even the very best swimmers get nervous before important competitions, but manage to channel that energy into best efforts

Being a little nervous is an advantage, not a disadvantage. This is what nervousness is for – to give you energy. Remember this in your next big race – channel the nerves into your swim, and feel your body unleash the incredible power it has been storing up for the race. Your mind will always provide what your body needs – and one of these things is nervous energy.

26-year-old American open water swimmer Fran Crippen lost his life today during the FINA Open Water 10K World Cup event in Dubai. He had been showing signs of slowing down during the third lap of five, possibly because the water was too hot, but it was only after all the other competitors had finished, that teammate Alex Meyer realized that Crippen was missing. Competing swimmers and divers went back to search for him, and found him two hours later unconscious just before the final buoy. Read Lane 9 News.

Researchers at McMaster University in Canada believe that the body can get as much benefit from ten short but intensive bursts of exercise, as it can from hours of moderate traning. HIT or “high intensive interval training” involves running or cycling (or swimming?) at almost maximum effort for a minute and then resting for about a minute before repeating the process around 10 times.
