The family of ex-swim champ Jamie Cail, who died of an alleged fentanyl overdose in the US Virgin Islands, claims she had been beaten — and that her death was not an accident.
Local police have said the 42-year-old woman, who hailed from New Hampshire, allegedly died of “fentanyl intoxication with aspiration of gastric content,” meaning particles from her stomach entered her lungs.
But Cail’s family disputes the finding that her death was “accidental.”
“We know that Jamie did not ingest fentanyl intentionally. There is definitely foul play,” Jessica DeVries, who identified herself as a cousin and a family rep, told Insider.
The family shared graphic post-mortem photos of Cail’s body with the news outlet that show her left eye apparently heavily bruised and a mark on her nose.

Police Stress Dangers of Swimming Amid Beach Hazard Statement | TMJ4 News
The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazard Statement for large waves and dangerous rip currents expected along Lake Michigan. The advisory remains in effect until Wednesday afternoon.
Kenosha Police stressed the dangers of swimming during hazardous conditions and are urging local residents to stay out of the water.
Simmons Island Beach is listed as one of the most susceptible to dangerous swimming conditions, according to the NWS.
“Lake Michigan is unlike most inland lakes,” Kenosha Police Public Information Officer Lt. Leo Viola said. “It’s really a sea. It may look calm and inviting on the surface of the water, but there’s always rip currents and different things that play there and it’s always unpredictable.”
