Yeehaa, two-time Olympic breaststroke champion Kosuke Kitajima believes he will need to set a world record to win a gold medal at the London Olympics next year, because of the rise of his rivals. Very reasonable thinking, as Alexander Dale Oen was only 0.13 off the world record of 58.58 seconds in the 100 breaststroke. Read IBNLive

He has battled a bout of “Thames Tummy”, ignored sewage warnings and even rescued a dog, while raising now very close to £1million “for street kids like Phillip“. What a hero, read his swimming diary here, and sponsor him here on Sport Relief.

As they say in this video below, amoebic brain infection are the medical equivalent of being struck by lightning, but still horrific. An extremely common amoeba living in just about every warm body of fresh water, that invades the central nervous system via the nose and kills you almost certainly within two weeks, even if diagnosed early. Chance of infection is only 1 in 10 million, nose clips can reduce risk, but best solution is still to avoid hot, stagnant freswater ponds and streams. Read ABC News and Wikipedia.

This is nice, Michael Fishback and friends freeing a humpback whale on Valentine’s Day. I’m skipping ahead to the moment when they get the last piece of nylon net off of her, and she starts celebrating or scratching her itchy skin on the surface of the sea or whatever. Via neotorama.com.

A good read here on athleticfoodie.com, by Olympic gold medalist and food enthusiast Garrett Weber-Gale:

On August 7th, I traveled to Copenhagen to apprentice at Noma. I had little notion of what I’d be doing, or what I’d be learning. Of course, I read up a bunch regarding their ‘Nordic Cuisine’, and some of the plates they serve. I really had no idea what to expect. What I soon came to realize, was that I was about to have my mind blown. Everything is done with precision and love for perfection. The extremes they go to, to use the best ingredients found in the surrounding Scandinavian region, the care they take in preserving everything they have by not taking short cuts. They prepare everything to exemplify it’s natural beauty and flavor, I was literally on a constant high from new information.
