“Once in a while an athlete comes along whose feats capture the attention of the whole world. HARDtalk speaks to one of them – the extraordinary Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe. At the height of his powers in 2006, Thorpe called time on his swimming career. Sports fans were mystified. Australia was mortified. Now Thorpe has revealed that through the years of his Olympic triumphs and world records he was crippled by depression. He has lifted the lid on the mental torment that can coexist with sporting triumph.”

Great Britain’s Hannah Miley in the Szczecin 2011 European Short Course Championships pool, I guess after the women’s 200 individual medley prelims. She ended up winning bronze in the event, plus a silver in the women’s 400 IM. Today she set a new European record in the 400 IM :-)

After the fourth and final day of the LEN 2012 European Short Course Championships in Chartres, France, the host country leapt even further ahead in the medal standings, to ‘win’ the event with 12 gold medals, 6 silver and 11 bronze, Denmark and Hungary second with 6 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze. Yannick Agnel and Camille Muffat both secured their almost certain gold medals in the 200 freestyle, albeit not breaking the expected world records, while Hannah Miley (GBR) and Rikke Møller Pedersen (DEN) broke the European records in the 400 IM and 100 breaststroke respectively, and Daryna Zevina of Ukraine the Championships record in the women’s 200 backstroke. The Swedish Swimming Federation today selected the Istanbul 2012 national squad, including Therese Alshammar, Jennie Johansson and that controversial Simon Sjödin, but not Sarah Sjöström. Sjöström has said earlier that she was unsure about her World Championships participation, and would use the Swedish short course championships this weekend to gauge her form, I guess that part is settled now.
