Cerro, a 3-year-old colt partly owned by 18-time Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps, won the $54,500 third race at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Phelps and his former coach, Bob Bowman, share an ownership interest in the Ireland-bred colt, which runs in the colors of Team Valor International.

“We are really excited to be part of Cerro’s partnership and see what he can do as he moves along this spring,” Bowman said.

The Icelandic are staging their annual Reykjavík International this weekend, that since its beginning in 1989 has attracted many a fine swimmer like Alexander Dale Oen (NOR), Therese Alshammar (SWE), Martina Moravcová (CZE) and Pál Joensen (FAR). The Faroese delegation counts only one swimmer this year, but that is okay, since he (Óli Mortensen, 1996) has managed to win gold in the 400 (4:06.44) and silver in the 1500 (16:09.16). Long course, of course. Two more Faroese junior records to his belt.

The dolphin that was swimming in the Gowanus Canal died late this afternoon.

Friday afternoon, as snow started to fall, about two dozen people stood on the Union Street bridge to look down at the dolphin.

The dolphin seemed to be stuck, moving up and down on the side of the canal, surrounded by a styrofoam cup, milk jug and what appeared to be a phone book.

“Only in Brooklyn,” a passerby said.

You can’t swim with alligators in any other zoo or wildlife park in the world but now you can in Kilkenny. The Reptile Village Zoo in Gowran is offering a chance for people to get out of their comfort zone and into a tank with two American Alligators – no safety cage and no corks on the teeth either. ‘Battle’ and ‘CC’ are both around nine feet in length and have about 150 teeth between them.
