“You put your life on hold to train for the Olympics,” said Dana Vollmer, who won three golds last summer. “It’s good for the national team to take some time off and find a good balance.”

So how did Vollmer find that balance?

    “Woodworking,” she said.

  • How to introduce your baby to the water

“Watch as Parents Magazine shows you how to make your baby’s first swim experience fun and safe. Pick the right time and place when introducing your baby to the water. Going in the morning may have less people in the pool and hopefully your baby will be well-rested. Acting confident in the water will reassure your baby that she is safe. Try dipping your baby’s toes in the water so she can get used to it against her skin and the temperature. Bring a water-proof toy or play a game to make the experience fun. If your baby becomes upset get out of the pool. She might not be ready yet, but try again in a month or so.”

School’s out, which means that there will be no more public swimming either, this side of summer. The flag half-mast is in memory of our dear old school janitor and lifeguard, who passed away this week, 74 years young. I made it a (relatively speaking) swift 1500 meter in his honor.
