    McAllister, who previously coached American sensation Janet Evans, said: “My time in Swansea has been a great experience.

    “It is by far the best coaching position I have had in my career and I am grateful to all the people along the way that have helped me during that time as I move on to the next chapter in my career.”

    Current British Butterfly record holder Michael Rock has retired from competitive international swimming.

    Over the last six years the Liverpool-born swimmer has been one of Great Britain’s most consistent Butterfly swimmers, winning the 100m title at every British Championships since 2008.

    The only truly safe ice in Juneau is at the Treadwell Arena. That’s one of the lessons from Saturday’s ice safety workshop.

    A full house packed the Mendenhall Visitor’s Center auditorium this weekend to learn about ice safety. The hour and a half workshop was made up of a slideshow and video of safety tips and advice before attendees headed out into the snow to watch CCFR volunteers demonstrate ice rescues on the pond next to the visitor’s center.

    The 13th Annual Polar Bear Swim, in Silver Creek, took place this past weekend. The brave participants braved the chilly temperatures Sunday for a dip in Lake Erie.

    The swim raises money for the Variety Kids Telethon, the Silver Creek Food Pantry, and local fire departments in Silver Creek and Sunset Bay. Even though we’ve had a big warm-up since last week, it was still pretty cold out there.

    Swimmer Adam Steck said, “My legs got numb like halfway in. We were in there for 30 seconds, my legs got numb but it was worth it.”
