Florida Fish and Wildlife Investigators are looking into an incident about a mile off the coast of Palm Beach near the Breakers that left a freediver in serious condition.

Investigators say Jorge Caba is out of surgery with a gash on his leg and a broken pelvis.

Caba said he is in a lot of pain.

Investigators say a boater ran him over off the coast and took off.

They say Caba had a dive flag and didn’t do anything wrong.

As we prepare to watch the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games next month in Sochi, Russia, The Valley Hospital is proud to present the incredible story of a former Olympic athlete whose bypass surgery more than 20 years ago has withstood the test of time thanks to the skills of the surgeon — Alex Zapolanski, M.D., Director of Cardiac Surgery at Valley

Russian swimmer Semyon Belits-Geiman, competed in the 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics, winning two medals. Following his Olympic victories, Semyon went on to be a coach, trainer, and sportswriter.

In 1990, while visiting San Francisco for a swimming event, Semyon began experiencing symptoms of a heart attack. He went to a nearby hospital where he was told he required cardiac surgery immediately. Dr. Zapolanski, who at that time was practicing in San Francisco, performed an advanced coronary bypass surgery on Semyon, who underwent a total of five bypasses that day.

More than 20 years after his surgery, Semyon remains very active, swims every day, and has never had another cardiac incident since his surgery.

It may be the middle of a freezing winter here in Russia but that’s not stopping the determined from taking a dip. A midnight immersion in water on the 18/19 January is the traditional way to celebrate the Orthodox holiday of Epiphany.

The date is considered holy by Christians, because on this very day Jesus is believed to have been baptized.

Russians believe that a priest can bless a river or a lake on this particular night and turn all of its water into holy water. Immersing oneself in it washes away all sins, it is said.

hunter-wrightOn 17 January, Hunter Wright from Redding, California, at 17-years old, became the youngest person to swim across the Straits of Magellan.

Wright was hoping to also beat the speed record for the crossing but the currents in the strait didn’t run as expected. While conditions were moderate as he began at 7:42am, with air temperature at 5 degrees Celsius (41F), water at 5.6 degrees (42.1F) and a current of 12 knots from west to east the current did not decrease as expected. As a result, Hunter was pushed towards the east, forcing him over the borderlines despite powering forward at about 70 strokes a minute. As he reached the centre, the currents started to change to form whirlpools in the area.

His coach and Water World Swim founder Pedro Ordenes – a Chilean native and the oldest person to cross the Strait – says: “Hunter impressed his support team as he kept a very steady pace during the whole crossing. The weather kept changing for the worse, as winds reaching 14 knots made their presence felt. Hunter then started to look fatigued but maintained his pace.”

Heavy in heart, Dr. Vorontsov writes to SwimVortex.com of the sorrow he feels over Efimova’s case. He rejects the notion that Efimova may have cheated deliberately; regrets that she did not ask for advise; defends US coach Dave Salo in the Russia-USA divide; points a cautious finger at land-training ‘gurus’; and looks forward to a frank and full explanation from Efimova.

Wearing scuba diving gear, Pascual Mimbela dives into the Pacific waters of Talara province with his brushes, spatulas, oils and canvases.

Mimbela paints the colourful fish he sees glide by, as well as the reefs and other aquatic sea life.

Mimbela said he became fascinated with the sea when he was a child, and dreamt of one day painting from the ocean floor.

“All my life I’ve painted boats, fish, beaches and waves. But this time, I decided to take it further,” he said.
