Michael Phelps said in Mesa on Wednesday his love of swimming and thirst for competition led him to come out of retirement.

The 22-time Olympic medalist will compete in the Arena Grand Prix on April 24 to 26 at the Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa.

Phelps told reporters he will be competing in the 100-meter butterfly and the 50-meter butterfly.

“I’m doing this because I want to,” Phelps said. “Nobody is forcing me to do this. I want to be back in the water.”

Some Canmore, Alta., residents caught a rare glimpse of a herd of elk swimming in the Bow River on Monday.

“We were just down going for a walk with my son and my mother-in-law and we were walking towards the river,” said Marcia Kinash.

“We were looking down and next thing I know, they were just swimming along.”

Nearly 40 years ago,  set world records as he won two gold medals during the Olympic Games in Montreal.

Monday night, Goodell came to Mission Viejo City Hall to defend the swim club that formed a mile away in his living room and helped earn him the top spot on that Olympic podium.

“I just want to say I support anything to keep the Nadadores program going,” Goodell said in council chambers overflowing with Nadadores supporters decked out in yellow and blue. “The things that they’re going to do in this world because of the discipline, the training, the love, the respect that they learned being a part of such a great program is invaluable to our community.”

Relatives of 19-year-old Hakeem “Kerron” Austin, who drowned in Valencia River on Saturday evening, are still trying to understand how the teenager went under the water and failed to resurface as he was described as a good swimmer.

“He was a strong, strong swimmer. He loved the water and since he was small, he was always making laps at the beach, in pools, in the river.  Basically, wherever it had water he was at home. So we find it very strange that his friends said he got into some difficulty and couldn’t get out,” said Austin’s mother Latoya Browne.

More than a third of American adults can’t swim the length of a 25-yard pool, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you’re among the 37 percent of adults who can’t, you’re at greater risk for becoming one of the nearly 10 people who drown each day, on average. Inability to swim is the No. 1 “risk factor” for drowning, the CDC says.

Nearly 80 percent of drowning victims are male; 70 percent are adults. Black children are three times more likely to be drowning victims than are white children.

The good news is if you don’t know how to swim, it isn’t too late to learn – no matter how old you are, says the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation, the charitable arm of U.S. Masters Swimming.
