    The “Seven Mile Miracle,” a stretch of coastline on Oahu’s North Shore, is the holy grail of big wave surf spots. It is also one of the most dangerous surf breaks on Earth. The lifeguards who patrol the beaches make upward of 1,000 saves per year, sometimes as many as 30 in one day. Tau Hannemann, a 15-year lifeguard veteran, is known as one of the best on Oahu. For Hannemann, lifeguarding is more than a job, it’s a calling.

    Ready to dive into swimming pool season? Well, you may want to consider the recent Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study that found 80% of public swimming pools had health and safety violations. The study covered 2013 inspection data from Arizona, California, Florida, New York and Texas, including 84,187 routine inspections of 48,632 public aquatic venues, including pools, hot tubs, water playgrounds and similar venues. In fact, some inspections were so bad (one in eight inspections) that the facility had to close immediately. Now, while these are public pools, who knows how safe the thousands of private pools may be? Unfortunately, if swimming pools are not maintained properly, they can quickly become large culture dishes for all sorts of nasty organisms. So, how do you tell if your swimming pool is safe?
