On Aug. 21, Greek police arrested Sara Mardini, 23, renowned as one of the Syrian “hero swimmer†refugee sisters, at an airport in Greece. She faces charges of people smuggling, espionage and membership in a criminal organization and is being held in an Athens prison. A hearing Friday was scheduled before a judge to review the accusations against her, but she could be detained for up to 18 months or until the case goes to trial, according to an attorney working on her behalf.

Mayor Ganim joined the Director of the Cardinal Shehan Center Terry O’Connor today to kickoff a free afterschool swim camp for 500 Bridgeport youth. The water safety and swim lessons are made possible through a $152,000 Pool Safely Grant Program (PSGP) awarded by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). “The staff in the Grants Department for the city worked hard to secure these funds because receiving water safety lessons can be the difference between life and death,†said Mayor Ganim. “Our youth will learn not only how to swim, but gain valuable water safety practices to be prepared when they are in a pool or any body of water.
Prior to 2010, the northernmost case of amoebic meningitis in the U.S. was in Missouri. It is now as far north as Minnesota, as well as in states like Indiana and Kansas. In that 2017 review, the authors note that “with climate data showing consistently warming temperatures, the reports of PAM [or amoebic meningitis] cases outside of the southern-tier states is cause for concern,†continuing on to say that physicians in more northern areas should now be wary of N. fowleri. Climate change is going to warm up more of the world, and that means more people will live in places with waters friendly to N. fowleri—people who may not be aware of the dangers. Amoebic meningitis may be rare, but that doesn’t mean it can’t become more common. And knowing the signs could save your life.
