  • Sudden outrage over Goldfish Swim, a decades-long tradition in Springdale

More than 1,000 fish are dumped into a pool for children to catch in Springdale’s “Goldfish Swim,” an event that’s been happening for years. But now, the tradition is causing quite an uproar.

Springdale city leaders said the Goldfish Swim is happening as planned Sunday afternoon. It’s the 46th year for the event, but animal advocates say now is the time for change.

“It’s abuse and it’s inhumane,” said animal advocate Lisa Kessler.

As lifeguard staff availability changes, the Waukesha County Parks lifeguard-staffed beaches at Fox Brook Park and Menomonee Park will begin to transition to “Swim At Your Own Risk” beaches beginning Thursday, Aug. 15.

“Switching the beaches to all Swim at Your Own Risk allows us to extend the swim season for residents and visitors for as long as the weather will allow,” said County Executive Paul Farrow. “The park beaches are a great place to stretch out the summer fun before school begins.”

A Valley man will be taking quite the swim this weekend.

As part of the “Escape The Rock” event, Michael Murtaugh will swim across the San Francisco Bay from Alcatraz to the shoreline. Hundreds will be making the swim and then running seven miles in a duothalon.

Murtaugh is swimming with a message about addiction, and to bring that message home, he’s swimming with his ankles shackled.

When Katie Ledecky became ill during the World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea and had to pull out of two of her races, we expected nothing less of the 15-time World Championship gold medalist. After suffering from a mysterious illness that caused headaches, insomnia, an elevated heart rate, and loss of appetite, the 22-year-old came out on top and took home the gold medal for the 800-meter freestyle and silver medals for the 400-meter and the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay.

“We had the World Championships. It wasn’t the week I was hoping for. It wasn’t the week I was expecting to have. I got a little sick and had to pull out of two races, but I was happy that I was able to build enough strength to swim my last two races, and come away from the meet with a gold and two silvers,” Ledecky said in an exclusive interview with Prevention.com.
