On August 4th 2019 the 32nd edition of the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence Marathon Swim over the length of the Lake Zurich in Switzerland took place with splendif weather and water conditions. Members of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team made this even unforgettable for all participants: solo swimmers as well as relay teams. First man in the main category was Dimitar Videnov from Bulgaria in 6:31 h, first among the women was Sandra Hornig from Germany in 6:51 h. Best team was team “Chlorine-Free” from Switzerland with 6:58h. See the whole result list as well as a link to the photo gallery here: ch.srichinmoyraces.org/z%C3%BCrichsee-schwimmen-marathon-swim

This gathering of activists is unprecedented in the history of the Games. In recent years, the Olympics have been consistently and successfully rejected by specific cities, but those anti-Olympics efforts always focused on what the event would do to one place. What this gathering aimed for was a coalescence of the disparate anti-Olympics movements for the sake of making a far more focused argument: The Olympics are untenable for any city.

In the United States, 64% of Black children can’t swim. As a result, they are 3x more likely to drown than white children their same age. But how did this happen? We take a look at the social history of America’s pools and how racial segregation shaped the current climate in pools across the country. #swimming #segregation
