Across Australia, small towns are dying out. Unfortunately, so is mine.

But when my local pool, the community hub for so many, was under threat of closure, I knew I had to do something.

I still remember the first time I touched the bottom of the deep end and I have many great memories of the afternoons I spent racing my siblings up and down the pool.

My family would often be the first ones there when it opened for the day, to do some laps before the sun came up.

To me, it is my home away from home.

Every weekend our football stars run onto the turf across the country and battle. They collide at break-neck speed, tackles are made, marks are taken, there are winners, there are losers. Most of all there are many, many sore bodies and many, many sore egos.

Is there more to your local swimming hole? Located in the centre of Tamworth is “Galala” – Paradise, home to “Gariya” the rainbow serpent.

Marc Sutherland shares the ancient old story of Gariya. Told since the beginning of time, passed down through generations this story tells of the importance of Aboriginal Lore and care for country, especially our rivers and waterways which are the veins and pulse of mother earth.

Many that visit Paradise for a swim are oblivious to its significance to Gamilaraay people of the Tamworth area.

Stig Severinsen can hold his breath for 22 minutes. He’s the world record holder but he’s not done yet. Now, Stig is using his unique powers to free dive in the most hostile of places. On 60 Minutes, watch as Stig swims the length of three Olympic swimming pools, under metre thick ice, in freezing water, on one breath, with only one way out. It’s an extraordinary feat. But still he’s not done. Stig wants to remove his wetsuit and try it again in nothing but a pair of speedos. What happens next, could kill him.
