Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo at the Rijeka 2008 European Short Course Championships. She won bronze in the 100 freestyle and was part of their record breaking 4×50 freestyle and 4×50 medley (swimming backstroke). Now Olympic champion in the 50 and 100 freestyle :-)
The London 2012 Olympics swimming championships are now officially over, Michael Phelps managed to win 18 Olympic gold medals and 22 Olympic medals in total before ending his swimming career. Sun Yang posted an extremely impressive 14:31.02 World Record in the men’s 1500 freestyle, ahead of Ryan Cochrane (CAN) in 14:39.63 and now former Olympic champion Oussama Mellouli (TUN) in 14:40.31. The US women set a 3:52.05 World Record in the women’s 4×100 medley, ahead of Australia in 3:54.02 and Japan in 3:55.73. USA also won the men’s 4×100 medley, clocking 3:29.35 ahead of Japan in 3:31.26 and Australia in 3:31.58. And Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) added the women’s 50 freestyle to her 100 freestyle Olympic crown, setting an Olympic Record of 24.05 ahead of Aliaksandra Herasimenia (BLR) in 24.28 and Marleen Veldhuis (NED) in 24.39.
On the penultimate day of the London 2012 Olympic swimming championships, Missy Franklin clocked a 2:05.06 World Record in the women’s 200 backstroke, ahead of Russia’s Anastasia Zueva in 2:05.92 and Elizabeth Beisel (USA) in 2:06.55, Franklin completing her clean-sweep in the backstroke events. Michael Phelps made it an undisputed historical greatest ever double three Olympic individual gold medals in a row, winning the men’s 100 butterfly in 51.21 ahead of Chad Le Clos (RSA) and Evgeny Korotyshkin (RUS) in 51.44.
USA’s Katie Ledecky upset favorites Rebecca Adlington and Lotte Friis in the women’s 800 freestyle, charging ahead and holding on to a 8:14.63 Olympic gold medal, Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia 2nd in 8:18.76, Rebecca Adlington (GBR) 3rd in 8:20.32 and Lotte Friis (DEN) fading to a 8:23.89 and 5th. Florent Manaudou (FRA) similarly upset the favorites in the men’s 50 freestyle, starting out great and holding on to a clear win of 21.34 ahead of Cullen Jones (USA) in 21.54 and Cesar Cielo (BRA) in 21:59. Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) led the women’s 50 freestyle semifinal in 24.07.

German waterpark “Galaxy Erding” has made their X-Treme Faser waterslide attraction “Nur für Männer” for security reasons ‘due to the female anatomy’. This after six women had reported injuries to the genital area last year, and some of them had to be taken to hospital. The Professional Association for Gynaecologists is sceptical, a spokeswoman saying there is no medical reason why women’s shouldn’t use a slide, unless they were pregnant. The park is now working on building a protective suit for women to use on the slide, “like for ice hockey”. Read The Local, via Arbroath.

Swimming is finished at the London 2012 Olympics, without any Nordic country taking a medal. The others were Athens 1896, St. Louis 1904, Melbourne 1956, Mexico City 1968, Montreal 1976, and Athens 2004. Gutted.
