Year In Review: Lochte leads list of top 10 Daytona Beach sports stories
Read The Daytona Beach News-Journal1. Lochte wins five Olympic medals
Swimmer Ryan Lochte had a somewhat disappointing London Olympics based on his high expectations. But the Spruce Creek product still enhanced his reputation as one of the sport’s all-time greats, winning five medals, including two gold — in the grueling 400 individual medley and the 4×200 freestyle relay.
Lochte had an epic U.S. Olympic Trials showdown with Michael Phelps, winning two events and finishing second in two others. But it was Phelps, again, who shined brightest at the Olympics, winning four more gold medals and two silver for a total of 22 medals in his remarkable career.
Lochte, meanwhile, upped his career Olympic medal count to 11 — five gold — from his three Olympic appearances. He’s planning one more Olympic foray at Rio de Janeiro in four years.
After taking some time off to enjoy his growing fame and dabbling in some acting, Lochte got his next four-year interval off to a rousing start — winning six gold medals, a silver and a bronze at the Short Course World Championships in Istanbul earlier this month. He set world records in the 100 and 200 IM and was named Male Swimmer of the Meet.

Science says: It is okay to pee in the pool
OMG – Phelps, Lochte, Adlington et al. were right all along, via the17thman:
Scientists are now confirming that Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte’s admission that they urinate in the swimming pool is really not such a big deal after all.
‘Urine is essentially sterile so there isn’t actually anything to kill in the first place. Urine is largely just salts and water with moderate amounts of protein and DNA breakdown products,’ biochemist Stuart Jones when asked about urinating in a pool.

“Hannah Miley reckons she’s on course for even more glory after learning how to drown out the pressure of expectation.
The Garioch swimmer just missed out on a podium place at London 2012 but hit back with medal-laden displays at the European and World Short Course Championships.
She won a gold and two silver medals at the European Short Course event in France last month and followed that up with gold and bronze medals at the world event in Turkey earlier this month.
Now the 23-year-old has her sights set on the World Long Course Championships in Barcelona in the summer before the small matter of defending her Commonwealth 400m individual medley title in Glasgow in 2014.”
