City officials have informed a competitive swim team that it can no longer practice at the Bloomfield Family Aquatic Center pool.

The team of 20 kids, ages 5-17, have used the pool for nearly five years for practices led by coaches Todd Adams and Mike McLehan, both swim instructors certified by “USA Swimming,” a national governing body for the sport.

On Monday, Steve Gromack, the center’s aquatic director, informed the coaches on the advice of City Attorney Ryan Lane that their use of the pool represented a liability based on water temperature guidelines for competitive swim practice.

General guidelines for competitive swim team training recommend 82 degrees or lower. Bloomfield’s 25-yard, multi-use pool was set at 87 degrees, which is within the range recommended for varied use.

So that is 30.6 degrees Celcius compared to 27.8 degrees Celcius recommended.

The former treasurer of the Poland Swim Club was sentenced Friday to five years probation and to pay back the remainder of the $25,000 he pleaded guilty to stealing from the club.

Brad Sackella, 40, of Four Seasons Trail, was handed down the sentence Friday by Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge R. Scott Krichbaum after Sackella, who was fired from the club in June, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony theft in a bill of information.

Sackella was accused of stealing the money as the treasurer. Prosecutors said he still has to pay back $15,100 in restitution.

Our local swim club has this in principle great idea to give every swimmer a medal at the annual club meet, by letting them race three at a time and then hand out gold, silver and bronze. Only problem, that the kids realize almost immediately that bronze means last. Bjarki got a silver, and mentioned something like ‘at least it’s not bronze’, on our way back home ;-)
