Swimming Australia coach Leigh Nugent responds to ‘culturally toxic’ accusation
Swimming Australia’s management has been criticised in an independent review of the team’s failure at the London Olympics. The review describes a ‘culturally toxic’ environment within the team with abuse of alcohol and prescription drugs, as well as flouting of curfews and bullying, going unchecked. Head coach Leigh Nugent describes the wording of the report as ’emotive’ but says all the issues raised are now being addressed. See The Guardian

Freediving Could Lead To “Drowning at the Surfaceâ€
Read CBS Miami
“They both told me that they saw a really bright light,†remembered Julie. “David said mom it was like looking into a welder’s torch. It was so bright! And uh… I think they were teetering on the edge of life and death. And their friends brought them back and I just believe it was a miracle. There were 60 breath hold incidents reported to DAN that year Divers Alert Network. There were 3 survivors. Two of them were my sons. I, I just am very grateful.â€
In fact, because so few freedivers survive shallow water blackout, few medical professionals even know how to treat survivors. Dr. Ivan Montoya is one of only three or four doctors in South Florida with that type of specialty.
“It’s basically you die or most of the time you have a problem with near drowning,†exclaimed Dr. Montoya with Mercy Hospital. â€A shallow water blackout diver or patient is a drowning patient. There’s nothing special that you do for that. You either die or it’s a near drowning.â€

Your body language shapes who you are
“Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.”

Surrender to Swimming
“While driving along the road as the sun was rising, we noticed how many people were taking an early morning swim in tidal pools. We wanted to capture this idea, hoping to inspire others to go out and explore the many tidal pools across our beautiful coastline.”
