    Read The Washington Post

In a letter sent by Athletic Director Craig Littlepage on June 27 and signed by Bernardino on June 30, one day before he abruptly announced he would be retiring after 35 years leading the Virginia swimming and diving program, Bernardino was instructed not to speak negatively about the university or the athletic department in exchange for certain benefits from the school.

Bernardino will continue to be paid his annual base salary of approximately $104,000 and receive university benefits through March 31, 2015, even if he takes a new job elsewhere. He and his wife also still have access to university fitness facilities and his family will keep their season tickets to all Virginia sports.

“Traditionally we used to recommend swimming as a good sport for people with asthma because the environment in a swimming pool is warm and humid, and those conditions are good when you are breathing hard. They generally don’t tend to cause the type of breathing problems that we see with the field sports.”

“We want to restore our patients to normal exercise capacity. We’re not particularly pushed on what sport they do, once they are able to do what they need to do and their asthma doesn’t interfere with that. So it can be field sports, it can be swimming, it can be any sport they want. We don’t have a favorite sport”

Knox Story, the district manager, says a series of drownings prompted the community to take action. “In 1953, there were three drownings in Reedsport in three separate incidents,” said Story.

A short time later, a Reedsport resident privately funded the facility, which now provides free lessons for Kindergarten through sixth grade kids in Reedsport.

The program has been going on since 1955. “There’s never been a drowning from any of the children that went through this program from a lack of swimming skill,” said Story.

For the past week or so, a monkey nicknamed “George” has visited the Kalidas municipal swimming pool in Mumbai, India, showing up at around 7am to swim for about an hour or so. It created a bit of a stir at first, kids jumping out of the pool and stuff, but it doesn’t bother the other swimmers, so members are starting to grow fond of it. It will have to go though, see Mumbai Mirror via Nothing to do with Arbroath

“We have informed the forest department, and they will take care of the monkey,” said the pool supervisor, Milind Bhingarde, told Mirror.
