For the first time in 50 years, the public was invited yesterday to swim in the Charles River.

The river, which was once famous for its filth, saw dozens take the plunge near the Hatch Shell as part of the Charles River Conservancy’s first public recreational swim.

“For more than a decade, the Conservancy has been working to bring public swimming back to the Charles River,” said Charles River Conservancy President Renata von Tscharner.
