Diana Nyad fires back against questions over Cuba-Florida swim
See CNN
During a conference call with more than a dozen of her peers Tuesday, Nyad was adamant that her swim was by the book.
“I swam,” she said. “We made it, our team, from the rocks of Cuba to the beach of Florida, in squeaky clean, ethical fashion.”
She said she never held onto a boat or another person “for any kind of flotation or support.”
Her navigator, John Bartlett, described how the team picked up a current that had them moving nearly four miles an hour for several hours on the second day of the nearly 53-hour journey. That’s how and when her speed nearly doubled, he said.

Team USA swim chair, coach Sid Cassidy questions legitimacy of Diana Nyad’s Cuba to Florida swim
See wptv.com
“In my gut I would be very surprised to learn she did the entire swim unassisted,” said Cassidy.
Cassidy, who also heads the swimming program at St. Andrews High School, questions a gap charted by Nyad’s crew. It is a roughly seven-mile stretch when Nyad apparently did not stop to eat or drink.
“I don’t know if it’s humanly possible to do what some of her crew is asserting she did, that whole swim without any assistance,” said Cassidy.
The South Florida endurance swimmer and coach is not alone.

Danes to keep momentum with big squads, Great Danes, Smart Track projects
So I wrote this piece for SwimmingWorld, yesterday, and fortunately got good help there to clean it up language-wise. Danish Swimming seems to be in very good hands.
At the 2013 Danish Aqua Clinic this weekend, the Danish National Team trio of sports director Mikkel von Seelen, head coach Nick Juba and national training center coach Shannon Rollason presented a bold new plan to keep the momentum going from a successful 2013 World Championships in Barcelona as the Danes focus on Rio 2016.
The plan going forward is that Denmark will be represented with record large squads at the Herning 2013 and Berlin 2014 European Championships, while working on strengthening the male and future aspects of Danish swimming with initiatives coined “The Great Danes” and “Smart Track,” respectively.

“I expect this to be an exciting new adventure for the Danish men who have lived in the shadows of our women’s team in recent years. It is a new focus and offers our best male swimmers the opportunity to step-up on the international stage. The Great Danes label needs to be synonymous with fast swimming!”
