Aalborg with Mie Ø. Nielsen take down two Danish records in one race
At the Tyrmót Ægis in ReykjavÃk today, the team from Aalborg in Denmark managed to break two Danish records in one race, clocking 1:50.61 in the women’s 4×50 medley, with Mie Ø. Nielsen leading out with a time of 26.96 and new Danish record in the first 50 backstroke. That is less than a second slower than the 1:49.87 world record that Indiana University had until yesterday, only now not mixed but girls only. The now former Danish women’s record in the 4×50 medley was Kvik Kastrup 1:51.29 in 2009, and the Danish women’s 50 back record Mie Ø. Nielsen’s 26.98 from the Danish team championships in March 2012. The meet results can be found here but the results from the last session are still missing.

Are 512 pushups too many for a swimmer? A Missouri jury says no
Read The Wichita EagleFive hundred twelve pushups.
Twice.
That’s 1,024 pushups.
Alexandra “Ali†Swee, now a Memphis, Tenn., college student, says she was told to do them one night five years ago during a Blue Springs practice when she was a 13-year-old member of the Kansas City Blazers swim club.
She contended the excessive pushups represented punishment dished out by her coach and contributed to shoulder pain that continues today. Her family filed suit, seeking money for past and future medical expenses related to her shoulder issues.
Her former coach and representatives of USA Swimming, the national organization with which the Blazers are affiliated, maintained the pushups were part of an occasional exercise intended to motivate swimmers to improve their speed.
Late Friday, a Jackson County jury ruled for the defendants.

Leopard seal tries to teach human to catch penguin
Awesome story from National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen here, describing how he wanted to swim with the feared leopard seals and ended up being almost force-fed by one. That Swede Göran Ehlme sounds like a funny guy too.

Lotte Friis skips retirement plans until after Rio 2016
Read SwimmingWorld or BT (in Danish)
Speaking with the Danish newspaper BT, Lotte Friis reveals that she was planning to retire after Herning 2013, but has decided to continue until the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, in an attempt to ‘avenge’ her flop at London 2012. It will be part time though, as she has already started to prepare for a life after swimming, where she hopes to be a television host or producer.
“The World Championships was an eye opener for me,” Friis said to BT. “I found out that I can still compete. I had otherwise planned to swim this season and then stop after the European Championships in Denmark. But that plan is now in the trash can. My confidence got a huge boost from the World Championships, and now I believe again that I accomplish something at the Olympics in Rio in 2016. There I aim to take a medal.”
