    On December 11th, Ferdinand Puentes captured many people’s worst nightmare on video: his plane making an emergency water landing.

    Puentes enjoys capturing takeoffs and landings, and so his GoPro was already rolling on that fateful day when something very bad happened to the single engine of the small plane in which he was a passenger.

    Puentes shares the tale of the crash, which killed one passenger while seven others survived, on his Facebook page, complete with dramatic stills grabbed from his GoPro. Among the more amazing details: Puentes almost got smacked by a humpback whale while trying to swim to shore!

  • Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin collaborated with artist Adhemas Batista to design a vibrant, limited-edition swim cap for Speedo USA’s Art of the Cap. All proceeds from this cap will go toward Right To Play, a global organization that uses sports to educate and empower children facing adversity. Every cap sold will raise awareness, raise money, and make a difference.

    Swansea swimmer Jazz Carlin has admitted she cried when coach Bud McAllister told his protégé he was leaving for a new role in Australia.

    Carlin has worked with the American guru for the last seven years in Swansea but McAllister will now move to Perth for a new challenge next month.

    McAllister told Carlin the news on Sunday and the 23-year-old revealed she was overcome by emotion.

    “It is upsetting that Bud will not be here anymore and I cried when he told me,” said Carlin.

    “It’s difficult because I came to Swansea when I was 16 and just a young girl.

    “Now I am 23 and I have been with him seven years.

    “But it’s an exciting new job for him and I wish him well.”

    Bud McAllister, the man who coached three of Britain’s finest swimming talents, is to leave Swansea.

    The American, who coached Jemma Lowe, Georgia Davies and Jazz Carlin, is leaving the Wales National Pool to take up a post in Australia. […]

    McAllister, who previously coached American sensation Janet Evans, said: “My time in Swansea has been a great experience.

    “It is by far the best coaching position I have had in my career and I am grateful to all the people along the way that have helped me during that time as I move on to the next chapter in my career.”

    Current British Butterfly record holder Michael Rock has retired from competitive international swimming.

    Over the last six years the Liverpool-born swimmer has been one of Great Britain’s most consistent Butterfly swimmers, winning the 100m title at every British Championships since 2008.

    Michael Rock The 26-year old will still be involved with the City of Liverpool Swimming Club, helping to mentor and develop younger swimmers but will no longer take part in individual international competitions.

    The only truly safe ice in Juneau is at the Treadwell Arena. That’s one of the lessons from Saturday’s ice safety workshop.

    A full house packed the Mendenhall Visitor’s Center auditorium this weekend to learn about ice safety. The hour and a half workshop was made up of a slideshow and video of safety tips and advice before attendees headed out into the snow to watch CCFR volunteers demonstrate ice rescues on the pond next to the visitor’s center.
