The 27-year-old man was surfing at Bawley Point, 250 kilometres south of Sydney, when the collision occurred.

“He has come over a wave and as he did so, a dolphin has come through and hit him in the pelvic area,’’ New South Wales Ambulance duty operations manager Wayne Dunlop said.

“The force has been enough to tear the patient’s wetsuit.’’

You don’t have to be a college athlete or professional sports star to participate in athletics. A diverse group of swimmers are keeping their competitive spirits alive by participating in Masters Swim.

Nearly 55,000 swimmers are members of United States Masters Swim, more than 100 of which participate in the Binghamton University Masters Swim club, or BUMS.

The organization accomodates everyone across the swimming spectrum.

“We have ex-collegiate swimmers, we have people new to swimming, we have triathletes that have joined us,” said Binghamton University Masters Swim coach Dan Kornblatt. “The lanes are divided by ability, not age or sex.”

The store at St. Mary’s Road and Osborne Street offered a free Slurpee to anyone who showed up wearing a bathing suit on Saturday.

According to Environment Canada, the temperature at the time was a balmy minus 32 degrees with the wind chill.

Derek Ducharme says going out in the cold is worth it in exchange for the treat.

“I used to be really crazy about Slurpees,” he said. “I slowed down, ‘cause of the health kick, New Year, but I’m breaking that resolution today, ‘cause it’s free, haha.”
