German athletes now risk jail time for doping
German athletes who test positive for banned performance-enhancing drugs could now face prison after the country’s controversial new anti-doping law officially came into force.
The legislation, passed by Germany’s Lower House, the Bundestag, and the second chamber, the Bundesrat, in November, passed into the statute books after it was signed into law by President Joachim Gauck.
Under the law, sportsmen and women who test positive for drugs or are found guilty of possession of banned substance can face prison terms of up to three years.
Those who provide them with the substances, including doctors and coaches, can be jailed for up to 10 years.

Dartmouth College Swimmer, 21, Dies in YMCA Pool After Trying to Complete Four Laps Underwater
Dartmouth college swimmer Tate Ramsden died on Monday while swimming laps in a YMCA pool in Florida, according to reports.
The 21-year-old Nashville, Tennessee native was trying to finish four underwater laps without coming up for air, sending his body into distress, the Associated Press reports.
“Tate had been swimming laps in the pool for some time and I was told he had swam approximately 4,000 yards before practicing his underwater swimming techniques,” Officer Douglas Stidham wrote in a report obtained by the AP. “It is believed he was likely attempting to complete a ‘100’ which is four laps across the pool without surfacing for air.”
