  • The Isles of Scilly swimrun: a new wild adventure

“It’s going to be incredible,” I overheard a local explaining. “They’re going to swim all the way to Tresco and back again.” Actually, it’s worse than that, I thought to myself, as I tried to walk off my pre-race nerves. We’d be alternating between swimming and running across six of the Isles of Scilly, off the southern tip of Cornwall. No stopping. No change of clothes. Just a wetsuit and a pair of trail shoes. Welcome to the sport of swimrun, invented by two Swedish adventurers with a penchant for drunken bets.

Parts of a mutilated body have washed up on a beach in Rio de Janeiro where beach volleyball teams will be competing within weeks at the Olympics.

Police said a foot and other parts had been found on the famous sands of Copacabana beach on Wednesday, being cordoned off by officers and covered in black tarpaulin next metres from a new stadium for August’s events.

The gruesome discovery came after more than a week of deadly gun battles in the city’s slums amid attempts to capture a Brazilian drug trafficker who escaped a hospital recommended to tourists.

Two skydivers have fallen to their deaths while performing an Olympic Rings aerial routine in Brazil.

A group of 28 skydivers had attempted to recreate the five Olympic rings while in freefall over Boituva, a town 72 miles west of São Paulo.

Boituva Fire Department told G1 the two men collided mid-air when it is believed their parachutes became intertwined, causing their fall.

The two men were named as National skydiving champion Gustavo Correa Garcez, 39, and instructor Guilherme Bastos Padilha, 47.

Correa Garcez died at a nearby hospital minutes after arriving while Bastos Padilha died at the scene due to traumatic brain injury.

The Games organising committee stated following the tragedy that the aerial show did not form part of the official preparations for the ceremony.
