• It’s not just the Baths themselves which are legendary, though – some of its swimmers went on to become household names.

John Besford had the notable claim of having caused Adolf Hitler to have a tantrum.

“John attended the closest primary school to Victoria Baths – Plymouth Grove School. He was a very accomplished swimmer and trained and competed at Victoria Baths,” says Wright.

This Olympic Swimmer angered then Chancellor of Germany Adolf Hitler when he won the 100 metre backstroke title at the 1934 European Championship in Magdeburg.

The story goes that Hitler had assumed that German swimmer, Ernst Kuppers, would win, and had commissioned a magnificent trophy. The trophy was made of bronze, shaped like an eagle, and weighed over 50 kilograms.

When Hitler discovered that Kuppers had not won the race, he stormed out of the stadium and refused to give Besford the trophy.

  • A 10-year-old boy managed to walk away with a few scratches Saturday after he was thrown from a slide at Dublin’s newly opened, $43 million water park, The Wave, according to the East Bay Times.

The Emerald Plunge, a three-story slide with an 80-degree angle drop, had only been running for 90 minutes prior to the incident.

A video from the East Bay Times shows the 10-year-old’s feet leave the water ride, then his back scrapes along its edge before he lands on the concrete next to the slide. In a matter of a few seconds he’s standing up as lifeguards run to help.

The boy’s parents chose not to have police or fire officials show up. Their son only appeared to have a scratched shoulder that was treated with first aid.

  • A 2-year-old boy died after crawling through the doggie door at his North Carolina home and falling into a backyard swimming pool.

WTVD reported that Jacob Hoagland got outside through a doggie door Thursday morning and fell into an above-ground pool that was attached to the Hope Mills house by a deck.

Authorities said the child’s father was doing CPR when deputies arrived. Deputies then started doing CPR until EMS arrived.

The child was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

“When you own a swimming pool, you need to take every precaution that you can,” said Sergeant Sean Swain with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, according to WTVD. “The county says you have to have a 48-inch fence. If you have doors exiting out to the swimming pool, you need to have alarms on them.”

The Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Social Services are investigating. No charges have been filed.

  • Olympic gold medallist Kyle Chalmers has made the decision to withdraw from the 2017 FINA World Championships team and will by-pass Budapest to focus on his long-term swimming career.

The break will enable Chalmers and his medical team to further explore his heart condition, known as Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), without the added responsibility of having to be in peak form and ready to compete for Australia in July. […]

“I have been swimming with an ongoing heart condition known as Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) and have increasingly begun to suffer from an abnormally fast heart rhythm during training and competitions, which now requires surgery. I have had a surgery in the past, and unfortunately, it did not work. Whilst the timing for this follow up is not ideal, the symptoms have reached a point where I must act to ensure I am in peak physical condition for next year’s Commonwealth Games trials and hopefully the Commonwealth Games.”
