• Swimming South Africa has announced that all swimming events will be put on hold for the time being as the country comes to grips with the impact of the coronavirus, it has left many swimmers and coaches stressed out as preparations for the Olympic Games have had to be altered, but as Olympic coach Rocco Meiring explains, you need to adapt and be patient.

  • He’s the second-most decorated swimmer in Olympic history.

  • With many areas concerned about hospital capacity, now is not the time to take any risks. Tommy Caldwell, a professional rock climber, told his Instagram followers last week that he wouldn’t be climbing outside during the health crisis: “Soon taking up space in a hospital bed will amount to a death sentence for someone else.”

  • ClassPass, the fitness platform that connects gym-goers with the right studio/fitness class, has today announced that it’s dusting off its shuttered video product in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. With some tweaks. […]

ClassPass launched a live video streaming product in March of 2018. The product was a sizable investment from the company, which set up a full broadcasting studio in Brooklyn. ClassPass Live, as it was called, also required users to have a ClassPass Live subscription, which came with a heart rate monitor for users to track their progress.

ClassPass Live eventually shuttered as the company reorganized its priorities to focus on global expansion and its corporate program. However, thousands of workouts from that product (in both video and audio form) have remained on the app for subscribers as an on-demand workout from home option.

Those video and audio workouts are now available for free to anyone who is signed in to the ClassPass app. For the live-streamed workouts from studio partners, ClassPass users will need to use their in-app credits to purchase those classes. That said, they do not have to be a subscriber — users can simply purchase credits a la carte in the app and use them towards classes.

  • Swim Ireland has announced that all regional and national competitions originally scheduled between now and the end of this season in August 2020 will no longer take place, and others will be postponed.

The association had already cancelled their Olympic and Paralympic trials, which were due to take place at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin at the beginning of next month, and with yesterday’s closure of non-essential businesses the NAC has also closed its doors.

That means that Ireland’s elite swimmers cannot train at their Dublin base for now.

As a response, the governing body has now taken the unprecedented step of cancelling or postponing not only its swimming events over the next five months, but also diving, water polo and masters events.

The full list of postponements and cancellations is here.

Swim Ireland said in a statement: “This decision has not been taken lightly and follows the most recent decrees of both the Irish and UK governments.

“We felt that it was important at this time to reassure our athletes and all of those who work with and for them that there is no urgent need during these difficult times to be back in a swimming pool to prepare for a Regional or National competition.

“For those of our members, for whom the pinnacle of  your swimming season was to compete in their Regional Championships, the Irish Open Championships, Irish Summer National Championships or the Irish National Division 2 Competition, we understand that this news is likely to be disappointing. However, we were concerned that there might be a level of stress and anxiety related to competitions still on the horizon whilst the opportunity to train in the pool was not available and we felt that it was important to give you clarity on the matter to allow any such worries to end.”
