China’s swimming superstar, Sun Yang, will still miss the Tokyo Olympic Games in July and August 2021, despite a shortened doping ban. Sun was banned from the sport after an incident in 2018 where he and members of his entourage were found to have deliberately broken vials of Sun’s blood samples taken by doping inspectors at an off-season test. The Court of Arbitration for Sport’s original verdict in 2019 was an 8-year ban, but that was reduced on appeal to 4 years and 3 months on June 22, 2021. Sun will only be eligible to race again in 2024 – the year of the Paris Olympics – when he will be 32 years old.
