Rebecca Adlington has described Bill Furniss as a ‘natural born leader’ as the man who guided her to four Olympic medals enjoys his first weeks as British head coach.
‘He has the knowledge, he is so experienced. Having been head coach at the 1996 Olympics he knows that role so well.
‘He commands respect from both coaches and swimmers. Bill has great communication skills – which is a two-way thing – and swimmers feel they can talk to him.
‘He’s a natural born leader – he’s fair, he doesn’t favour people. It’s really good.’

South African National Championships interrupted by burst pipe
Read Swimming World Magazine and SwimNews, a pipe burst interrupted the South African National Championships in Port Elizabeth yesterday, making the water murky and green and forcing them to first cancel the second day of competition, before today changing the format to timed finals. One casualty of this is Cameron van der Burgh, who now will miss the 100 breaststroke final because of leaving for the Alexander Dale Oen Memorial in Norway, Swimming South Africa though ensuring everybody that “He will be considered for [Worlds] selection”
