The Mercury yesterday revealed Thorpe had been in hospital since Wednesday for shoulder surgery and was being treated for depression and alcohol issues.

Thorpe’s management released a statement claiming the swimming great was in hospital for treatment on his injured shoulder.

“Ian is not in rehab,” a SEL spokesperson said.

“Ian was in hospital for an operation on his shoulder and is pleased to let his friends and fans know that he is now out of hospital and on the mend.”

SEL was always likely to deny the former Olympic champion was battling depression and alcohol abuse. […]

Grant Hackett said he was taken aback.

“I was only with Ian a few weeks ago,” Hackett said.

“I knew because he’d spoken openly in the past there was some demons he was confronting and battling, but to hear it to this extent did surprise me.

Ian Thorpe’s management has denied that the Olympian is in rehab battling depression and alcohol abuse, saying instead he was in hospital for a shoulder operation.

The 31-year-old was injured in a fall earlier in the week, according to media reports on Friday, and was admitted to hospital on Wednesday night.

But his management, SEL, said the report he had been admitted to a rehabilitation facility was incorrect.

“Ian is not in rehab,” an SEL representative said. “Ian was in hospital for an operation on his shoulder and is pleased to let his friends and fans know that he is now out of hospital and on the mend.”

Australian swim star Alicia Coutts is set to swim on to the Rio Olympics, and it’s all thanks to her wedding venue being booked out.

Coutts had initially planned to marry her fiance Steve this year, with the pair floating the prospect of having kids next year.

But after failing to secure their preferred wedding venue for this year, Coutts will tie the knot in September 2015.

And given the Rio Olympics is less than 11 months after that, Coutts says she’s likely to put off kids until after the Games.

“I’m not 100 per cent saying I’m going to Rio. But seeing as my wedding is now in September 2015, there is a good chance I’ll swim on to Rio,” Coutts said on Thursday.
