GA swimming coach Dick Shoulberg takes leave of absence
Read Philly.comGermantown Academy’s revered swimming coach, Dick Shoulberg, is on leave because of “a personnel issue,” a school administrator said Monday.
In an e-mail to parents last month, the school announced that assistant coach Claire Crippen would serve as acting director and acting head coach of the girls’ team in Shoulberg’s absence. Assistant coach Chris Lear will be acting head coach of the boys’ team, athletic director Jim Fenerty said.
Head of School Jim Connor said he could not comment on Shoulberg’s leave but said he hoped it would be resolved “very soon.”

How two guys mapped all the pools in Los Angeles
Read Los Angeles Times“Using complex computer mapping, they counted 43,123 between the Hollywood Hills and San Pedro, from pools shaded by leaf-covered pergolas in Santa Monica to ones surrounded by chain-link fences in Alhambra.
Along the way, they discovered something more than just the real-world versions of the iconic David Hockney pool utopias. Their project also proved that two non-experts were able to take a massive amount of freely available data to peek into other people’s lives. […]

The duo used eight publicly available databases, including latimes.com’s Mapping L.A., for the project. Other data sets used included the county’s parcel boundaries service, the Los Angeles County sheriff’s crime database, the assessor’s data set and a database that contained those donating money during the Proposition 8 campaign on gay marriage and the Megan’s Law list of registered child molesters.
That’s why the “Big Atlas of L.A. Pools” came to include a map that shows where sex offenders with swimming pools live.
“It seems that very few sex offenders live on property with pools,” the analysis concluded.

Amazing video shows underwater rescue of Nigerian cook Harrison Okene

A new video on LiveLeak.com shows the amazing underwater rescue of a Nigerian man stuck nearly three days in an air pocket 100 feet underneath the Atlantic Ocean.
Harrison Okene was on a tugboat off the Nigerian coast last June when a heavy swell caused the vessel to capsize. His 11 colleagues drowned quickly, but Harrison was able to find an air pocket as the ship sunk into the darkened depths.
After three days underwater listening to large sea creatures fight over his comrades’ corpses, Okene was found by a group of very surprised South African rescue divers. â€He’s alive! He’s alive!†an excited rescuer exclaims on video as Okene visibly gives thanks to God.
