  • Kvasha sends the locals to seventh heaven

    Kiev (LEN) – A seventh European title for Illya Kvasha on 1m, seventh heaven for the local fans. This is the balance after host Ukraine got the first gold at the 2017 European Diving Championships. Kvasha finished atop in his “living room”, at the Sport Centre LIKO as he took the lead after the fourth dive and claimed gold with a total of 431.75 points in a thrilling competition. Great Britain stroke another gold, this time in the women’s 10m synchro.

  • Loads of swim gear belonging to U.S. soldiers have been stolen from a military compound on Hawaii’s Big Island.

    West Hawaii Today reports the soldiers woke up last week to find two kayaks, 10 to 20 snorkel sets, all of their fishing poles, two tackle boxes and two paddleboards stolen from the military compound. Food, a ukulele and a guitar were also stolen.

  • Former Rio de Janeiro State Governor Sérgio Cabral has been sentenced to 14 years in prison today after being found guilty of corruption and money laundering charges.

    Some of the allegations involve construction projects connected with Brazil’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and then the Olympic and Paralympic Games two years later.

    This includes alleged embezzlement of funds from the renovation work in the Maracanã Stadium used for the FIFA World Cup final and all Rio 2016 ceremonies.

    The 54-year-old served as Governor of Rio between 2007 and 2014.

    He was heavily involved in preparations for the Olympics before and after the city was awarded the Games in 2009.

  • It’s a lifeguard’s job to keep swimmers safe at the beach or pool, but they don’t usually have to save people on their first day at work! Meet Jack Viglianco, 15.

    This teenage lifeguard put his life-saving skills to the test, just 20 minutes into his first shift at the Foster Pool in Lakewood, Ohio. Jack got his first job as a lifeguard, after completing his training last week. On the first day, he saw a young child, flailing in the water, screaming out for help.

    “I’m glad that I knew what I was doing, up on that chair,” he said.

    If he hadn’t, a 4-year-old child may have died. Jack quickly jumped into action before the child went underwater. He said his adrenaline was pumping, and his hands were shaking.

    “I mean, it was my first day,” said Jack, “I mean, my heart was racing.”

  • Right, as a friend of his pointed out, there is this adventurer called Tomba, now well into swimming the 400 km coast of Albania, and vlogging pretty impressively all the way.

    He originally planned to swim a 1200 km route across some Indonesian islands but had to change plans because of strong seasonal currents in the area.
