After the tragic drowning of a 12-year-old girl in a local swimming hole in the early 1950s, the town of Portland decided to act.
The local cement works donated a parcel of land and a huge supply of equipment to quickly construct a local swimming pool to ensure families had a safe place to swim.
After six decades in operation, the Portland Olympic Pool remains a huge source of pride for the town’s citizens.

Having won 13 SEA Games, 3 Asian Games medals from 2011 to 2017, Danny Yeo is a swimmer synonymous with fierce determination and a great comeback. He has trained and competed at the highest levels of elite swimming in Singapore, South East Asia and Asia.
For someone who started relatively late in the game, he has accomplished a great deal. He has missed some critical milestones including the opportunity to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics due to a bout with dengue. But it never stopped him from making the all-important comeback.

Across Australia, small towns are dying out. Unfortunately, so is mine.
But when my local pool, the community hub for so many, was under threat of closure, I knew I had to do something.
I still remember the first time I touched the bottom of the deep end and I have many great memories of the afternoons I spent racing my siblings up and down the pool.
My family would often be the first ones there when it opened for the day, to do some laps before the sun came up.
To me, it is my home away from home.
